ABSTRACT: This research aims to investigate how the symbolism of the mythical hero manifests itself in the path of personal and professional life of the soccer player Garrincha, considering that football is full of mythical and religious meanings. The informations about Garrincha´s life were acquired through "open interviews" with four sports writers and four former football players, all of them were contemporaries of him. This material was enriched with literature from books, newspapers and magazines of the period, with reference to the greatest book of Ruy Castro, Estrela solitária: um brasileiro chamado Garrincha. From the dialogue between the theoretical analysis, especially the views of Mircea Eliade, Joseph Campbell, Junito Brandão and Antonio Costa and empirical data gathered, it is concluded that the life history of Garrincha became evident signs, attitudes and behaviors that lead to the status of mythic hero. Among these main evidence for the presence of the symbolism of the mythical hero in Garrincha"s life, may be highlighted: the poor boy, who through individual effort, rises to the status of an idol of his people; a man who crystallized in his way of being, dressing, talking, playing, the black Brazilian, white, Indian, simple, humble, suffered; the responsible for the extraordinary achievements in the 1958 and 1962"s World Cup. The divine agent who, after more than fifty years of his incredible feats, remains fresh in the minds of Brazilians; The man who follows the tragic fate of heroes.
