Inside the Football Museum Collections: Pelé at 80

In the year 2020, the King of Football celebrated his 80th birthday! Born in the city of Três Corações (in the Brazilian State of Minas Gerais), Pelé earned worldwide acclaim for his football-as-art virtuosity and mastery of the ball. At just 17 years of age, he lifted his first World Cup Champions Trophy – which was also the first for Brazil – and subsequently went on to cement the archetypal image of the Brazilian who is good with a ball. The Football Museum is now paying due homage to Edson Arantes do Nascimento, who turned 80 on 23 October of last year. Along with the temporary exhibition Pelé at 80 – the King of Football, open to visitors between October 2020 and April 2021, the Brazilian Football Reference Center (CRFB) has also put together a compilation of images, books and films that tells the full story of the man who wore the number 10 jersey for Brazil.

Digital collections

Of over 60 digital collections in the Football Museum archive, five contain material on the King, making a total of 232 photos and newspapers. The collections come from players, journalists, photographers and other professionals who were Pelé’s contemporaries, including Julinho Botelho, Thomaz Mazzoni, Antônio Lúcio and Mário Américo. There are also collections put together by fans just like us – such as that of Sebastian Vasquez.

Bibliográfico

The Brazilian Football Reference Center Library contains 39 books, including biographies and catalogues, on Pelé’s career. Most were published in Brazil, the oldest being “I am Pelé” (co-authored by Benedito Ruy Barbosa), from 1961, and “Voyage around Pelé” (by Mário Filho), from 1963. 

However… suppose you want to find out more about the history of the King but don’t have time to read the whole book collection. Where do you start? 

To help with this, we, at the CRFB team, have picked out the four books we think are most important.

In the form of a scrapbook, this book contains photographs, newspaper cuttings and posters representing key moments in the life of Pelé: from his thousandth goal to the portrait created by Andy Warhol in 1977, from hugging Muhammad Ali to his last appearance for the Brazilian national squad. This publication also contains a list of all the games played and goals scored by Pelé, by year, date, team and opponents.

Writing a biography of Pelé is as difficult as marking him on the pitch. Who better then to write it then than the man himself? Written in easy-to-read, almost conversational, language, this autobiography describes the joys and tribulations of the unparalleled career of the greatest footballer of all time. Pelé is not afraid to address his anxieties—infighting and family difficulties. No other footballer has been the subject of so many biographies, but none of these portray his life so well as the one penned by the King himself.

PINHEIRO, Domício (org.). Era Pelé: documento histórico-fotográfico da vida do maior jogador de futebol de todos os tempos. São Paulo: Seqüencial, 1984. 386 p.

This 386-page tome contains a collection of images from throughout Pelé’s career taken by “the King’s official photographer”, Domício Pinheiro, who accompanied Pelé during the best years of his career and was one of the principal photojournalists of the Golden Age of Brazilian football.

DE VANEY. A verdade sobre Pelé: as fantasias, os exageros, o mito, as histórias de um desertor. São Paulo: Companhia Lytographica Ypiranga, 1976. 300 p.

This controversial book was published in 1976 by the journalist Adriano Neiva “De Vaney”, who accompanied Santos on and off the pitch. The aim was to demystify the figure of Pelé, arguing that much of the statistical and historical information available on the player is inaccurate. The copy in the library is one of the few still in existence, since, weeks after its launch, the book disappeared from stores. The reason why remains unknown to this day.

Multi-media Library

Would you like to watch a film about Pelé? 

The Multi-Media Library has nine of them! These range from documentaries about the 1958 World Cup to a film about the New York Cosmos; from tales of the career of the Santos superstar to a blockbuster starring Sylvester Stallone and Bobby Moore. Pelé himself also plays a goalkeeper in this one! And we are not talking here about the match against Grêmio in 1964. This is the 1986 movie Os Trapalhões e o Rei do Futebol (The Tramps and the King of Football)!
